Welcome to Digital Pulse Academy. In this first lesson, we will answer a simple question. What is cryptocurrency? You will learn what makes it different from money in a bank, why Bitcoin matters, and one important safety rule to remember.
Cryptocurrency is a digital asset that people can transfer using computer networks. Some cryptocurrencies use a blockchain, a shared record of transactions checked by many computers. Unlike a bank account, Bitcoin does not depend on one bank to maintain that record.
Imagine Alex wants to send value to Sam. With a bank transfer, the bank updates its own records. On Bitcoin, the transaction goes to a network where computers check it against shared rules. Once it is accepted into a block, it becomes part of the public record. Bitcoin is one cryptocurrency, not the name for every digital coin or token.
Different projects have different rules, purposes, and risks. Just because an asset is digital or uses blockchain technology does not mean its price will rise. The key takeaway is this. Cryptocurrency is a broad category, and Bitcoin is one example.
Before using any digital asset, learn how it works, understand the risks, and protect your information. In the next lesson, we’ll explore how Bitcoin and blockchain work.
